GO Tecnobarricas

The UVaMOX group at the University of Valladolid is proud to contribute to the GO TECNOBARRICAS project, funded by the Operational Groups program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (financed with FEADER and MAPA funds), with the transfer to the sector of the development obtained after many years of work and several research projects (AGL2014-54602P, AGL2011-26931, VA028U16, VA124U14, VA315P18). GO TECNOBARRICAS is a project that works on developing technological solutions to optimize the manufacture of barrels with homogeneous characteristics and a known oxygenation rate.

One of the most important stages in the winemaking process is aging in oak barrels, in which oxygen plays an essential role in regulating the physical-chemical processes that define the harmonization of the final product. GO TECNOBARRICAS aims to develop technological solutions to classify American and Spanish oak staves based on their oxygen transfer rate (OTR) in order to build homogeneous barrels with controlled oxygenation.

Learn more about this project that can improve competitiveness in several sectors.

The system developed by GO TECNOBARRICAS will open the door to a new era in wine barrel manufacturing, based on precision, traceability, and customization, which will help improve the positioning of Spanish cooperages.

In turn, this technological leap in barrel manufacturing will enable the design of new wines with distinctive characteristics, which may improve the market position of wineries using this new product.

Cooperages: which will benefit from the digitization of the stave classification process.item
Wineries: which will have greater control over the aging process.em
Sawmills: which will benefit from the increased value of oak species.

The Operational Group proposes a triple impact:

1. Economic: Improving the competitiveness of cooperages and the wine, whiskey, and distilled spirits sector and impacting the local rural economy through national oak species.

2. Environmental: Mitigation of climate change and diversification of wood species, which will result in the improvement of their habitats.

3. Social: Employment opportunities and the fight against depopulation in rural areas by developing the wine and forestry sectors.
